    Food for thought:

    A woman shopping for vegetables

"A head of lettuce takes 25 years to decompose in a traditional landfill" from the documentary Waste

At first this seems impossible, but when you think about it we bag our garbage in plastic and mix it in with other non compost materials.  When you think of it that way it makes more sense...

    More:

    • The average person throws away 0.91 pounds of food waste a day.
    • Food waste in landfills creates methane, a Greenhouse Gas (GHG) 28 times more potent than carbon dioxide.
    • When you use our services you make a direct impact on local environmental sustainability
    • The average landfill operates for 30-50 years. Help us make ours last as long as it can!

A pie chart showing who is wasting the most food

Residential is the yellow, we couldn't believe it either, the biggest part of food scrap waste?

That is why we dedicate our efforts solely to residential pick ups.  Also big businesses will haul for businesses, because that is here the money is.  Our motives are more for the Earth, getting paid is something we hope to get later, but for now serving residents, paying for expenses and growth are our goals.

    Did you know:

Percentage of waste in a garbage bag

    • The average person throws away nearly one pound of food a day https://www.cbsnews.com/news/americans-waste-nearly-a-pound-of-food-each-per-day-study-finds/
    • * Food waste in landfills creates methane, a Greenhouse Gas (GHG) 28 times more potent than carbon dioxide.
    • We partner with
      • A local composting facility to turn your food scraps into healthy soil.
      • We are partnering with the OHSWA to broaden the impact of this energy-producing capacity in our community, while reducing unnecessary growth of local landfills.
        • The Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority (OHSWA) has ways to capture methane, as featured in Google’s 2017 Environmental Report.*
        • In 2019, the OHSWA will begin operation of a state-of-the-art system of capturing 100% of methane from food waste and using it to produce energy (Anaerobic Metabolizing).

    Recycling

Recyclable plastic bags and film packaging

Return these plastic films to grocery stores near you! If it stretches it is recyclable. If it snaps it's not!

How else can you take a bite out of the landfill?

    An open refrigerator

    Freeze it

    Freeze it

    Freeze it

If something is in your fridge and will go bad soon, put it in the freezer.  So you can enjoy the food later.  This saves food waste.

    Various food on a table

    Batch cook

    Freeze it

    Freeze it

Cook in larger quantities and freeze them or split the food up for the week.  This saves you on buying different ingredients for different meals.  And if you freeze them you can still have variety.  This saves money at the grocery store and waste from the landfill.

Sweets and desserts on a table

    Plan it

    Freeze it

    Plan it

Make a plan of what you will eat and make a list for grocery shopping.  This saves you time, $$$ , and waste that you would otherwise throw away.

    Earth Friendly House Ideas

    Cleaning Supplies

I use to have a local supplier, unfortunately she has stopped creating cleaning supplies.  Although you can make your own or buy plant based products.

    Sink Sponge

I can't tell you if this is for certain better for the Earth, but I can tell you it cuts down on keeping germs around.  Switch your sink sponge with a stack of wash cloths.  Use one a day and switch them out.

    Reusable Napkins

If you make or purchase reusable napkins you can wash them with your clothes and they often are so small they can be added to an already full load.  I made my own, let me know if you would like to purchase some from me.

Reusable diapers (avaliable for children and adults)

If you are using diapers, try reusable.  I am also experimenting with my own invented inserts that make this a less messy job.  If you are interested in learning more ask me.

Reusable menstrual pads, cup or dish

These take a learning curve to try out and a willingness to experiment till you find what is right for you, but it sure cuts down on waste.  Stay tuned, hopefully I will have my own design created for sale shortly.

    Other things you can do...

    Solar Panels

If your house has a roof facing south or west you can have them put on your roof or if you have enough land you can put them on the stands in your yard.  Either way they can help off set your electric use.

    Wind Turbine

Although I have only heard second hand from others who had a wind turbine, but I've heard that they can be very cost effective.  The only thing is you need a lot of land for this.

Insulation, drapes and energy efficient windows

Most of these are decided with construction either a remodeling or new build, but they can add up to help your bills and stop the Earth from needing to waste resources.

    Geothermal

Although I have only heard of the ideas they can either drill deep wells or a longer low dug piping system that is heated and cooled by the Earths constant temperature to then heat or cool your home depending on the season the Earth counters that.

Do you have another idea or ideas I should add?
